Axway's Tumbleweed Validation Authority Integrates with BlackBerry Solution for Government Mobile Security

BlackBerry Smartphones Wirelessly Validate User Identity For Enhanced Mobile Security At Government Agencies

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Tumbleweed® Communications Corp., now part of Axway Inc. and an industry leader in managed file transfer, email security, and identity validation, today announced that its Validation Authority™ identity validation suite now integrates with BlackBerry® smartphones from Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM) to further support and enhance mobile security at government agencies.

With this new level of Validation Authority integration, a government user of a BlackBerry smartphone adds a Common Access Card (CAC) reader to their BlackBerry smartphone. The BlackBerry smartphone with Validation Authority then wirelessly validates the user’s CAC digital certificate status and grants appropriate access to email systems, secure Web sites, trusted systems, and mission-critical applications.

"Government organizations take mobile security issues such as unauthorized access and lost devices extremely seriously, making this integration valuable for the continued success of government BlackBerry deployments," said Hari Nair, product manager at Axway. "Validation Authority leverages the BlackBerry solution to ensure that government agencies maintain a secure and streamlined validation process that pairs mobile productivity with mobile security."

The Tumbleweed Validation Authority Suite of products validates the status of digital certificates in real time using a variety of protocols including OCSP and SCVP, ensuring that revoked credentials cannot be used for secure emails, smart card login, Web access, wireless, VPN, or other electronic transactions that may compromise mission-critical infrastructure.

The Validation Authority solution is a comprehensive, scalable, and reliable framework deployed by millions of customers worldwide to provide digital certificate validation on a wide range of platforms in diverse operating environments. Government agencies, including all four branches of the U.S. military and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), have deployed Tumbleweed’s solutions enterprise-wide to provide digital certificate validation to its millions of users. Axway and Tumbleweed’s adherence to open standards has benefited the entire DoD community, making it the most widely-deployed validation solution in the marketplace.

Validation Authority works with BlackBerry® Mobile Data System and S/MIME Support Package as part of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server. With the support of the BlackBerry solution, Tumbleweed identity validation technology can benefit the entire civilian and Department of Defense (DoD) community, adding to Validation Authority's credentials as the most widely-deployed validation solution in the marketplace. Validation Authority is Certification Authority neutral, and certified FIPS 140-2, FIPS 201, DoD JITC, NIST PDVAL, Entrust Ready, IdenTrust and Common Criteria compliant. Validation Authority is also part of the IdenTrust financial trust infrastructure.

The Axway-Tumbleweed merger was finalized in September 2008 and Tumbleweed’s operations are in the process of integration with Axway's.
