Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) chooses fail-safe anti-spam solution
60 per cent of RoSPA's email identified as spam and blocked by Tumbleweed MailGate appliance Hurst, UK– 1 November 2004 -- Tumbleweed Communications EMEA, the leading provider of secure e-mail and secure data delivery solutions, has today announced that the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has deployed the new MailGate 2.2 anti-spam appliance. RoSPA is using MailGate 2.2 as its first solution to fight the evolving spam menace and dramatically reduce the amount of time employees spend sorting and deleting spam from their legitimate email. With a history stretching back more than 80 years, RoSPA is a registered charity employing about 120 people. The society aims to enhance the quality of life by exercising a powerful influence for accident prevention. Employees noticed they were receiving increasing volumes of spam and wasting a growing proportion of each day having to sort and delete junk email. Sensing this was beginning to impact on the society’s ability to provide information, advice, resources and training to the public, a decision was taken to implement an anti-spam solution. RoSPA evaluated a number of different approaches to deal with spam including software and outsourced email-filtering services but decided that an appliance was the best fit for their needs. Hitesh Mehta, Systems Analyst, RoSPA commented, “We needed a simple but powerful anti-spam solution which we could implement quickly and would require little maintenance, enabling RoSPA to concentrate on our mission without continued frustration. Tumbleweed MailGate 2.2 was the perfect fit for our requirements. It was very easy to implement and is currently correctly identifying and blocking 60 per cent of our email as spam which underlines just how big a problem we are now tackling.” Small and medium sized organisations are today faced with an increasingly complex range of anti-spam solutions and providers. Tumbleweed’s MailGate 2.2 is an easy to install appliance that uses artificial intelligence Intent-Based Filtering (IBF) that analyses the intent of email messages much like a human being would. To further increase the power of MailGate, RoSPA are also using Tumbleweed’s Dynamic Anti-spam Service (DAS), an Internet-based subscription service that downloads updated anti-spam heuristics up to six times per day. By analysing both spam and legitimate email gathered from worldwide sources, the Dynamic Anti-spam Service helps minimise the number of “false positives” – where legitimate email gets blocked by traditional heuristics-based spam filters. David Brunswick, Technical Director, Tumbleweed Communications EMEA added, “Small organisations face a tough decision in picking through the confusing range of complex anti-spam solutions. Many are often attracted to seemingly low-cost solutions without considering the long-term effectiveness of the solution they are purchasing and the total cost of ownership. We have noticed that an increasing number of SMEs have warmed to anti-spam appliances but many of these require frequent updating and adjustment. MailGate 2.2 is an anti-spam appliance that adapts to the ever-changing threat and delivers some of the best spam capture rates on the market.” Tumbleweed is currently offering a £1,000 trade-in programme for UK firms to help them convert to Tumbleweed’s new MailGate 2.2. Organisations can trade in a Barracuda or similar spam firewall appliance and enjoy a £1,000 reduction of the list price of the MailGate 2.2 appliance. The special offer also includes a 12-month subscription to the Tumbleweed Dynamic Anti-spam Service to further enhance the appliance’s email filtering capabilities. Customers will also benefit from a one-year subscription to the advanced Kaspersky anti-virus engine, protecting their organisations against viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious code that can cripple corporate networks and compromise confidential data. Unique anti-spam technology MailGate incorporates advanced email security features from Tumbleweed’s enterprise email security software, including encrypted and signed email as well as policy based email filtering. This will allow SMEs to support future internal or external demands for enhanced email security and management.
