Entrust and Tumbleweed Expand Secure Messaging Initiatives
Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement Reaffirms Companies’ Commitment to Grow Secure Internet Communications DALLAS, Texas and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – February 25, 2004 - Entrust, Inc. [NASDAQ: ENTU], a world leader in securing digital identities and information, and Tumbleweed Communications Corp. [NASDAQ: TMWD], a leading provider of secure Internet messaging software for enterprises, financial services organizations and government, today announced a patent cross-licensing agreement intended to expand the companies’ secure messaging initiatives. Under the terms of the agreement, Entrust and Tumbleweed have entered into a broad cross license covering their respective patent portfolios. The agreement covers selected patents and patents issuing from patent applications that have been filed or that may be filed by either company over the next three years. The cross license agreement builds on the two companies’ commitment to further the growth of secure Internet communications. This intellectual property exchange will allow each company to continue to innovate and broaden its range of commercial products and services. As part of the agreement, the companies have cost-effectively resolved a patent interference proceeding before the US Patent and Trademark Office involving U.S. patents 6,393,568 "Encryption and decryption system and method with content analysis provisioning" and 6,609,196 "Email firewall with stored key encryption/decryption", which cover technologies for messaging content analysis. The agreement allows each company to use the technologies covered by both patents, and Entrust has assigned to Tumbleweed the '568 patent in return for a financial consideration. “Both Entrust and Tumbleweed are recognized as pioneers in our respective industries,” said Al Delorenzi, vice-president, Corporate and Business Development, Entrust, Inc. “The aim of this agreement is to create an environment at Entrust and Tumbleweed that fosters creativity and innovation as we continue to expand our respective product lines.” “Our two companies are doing great work in different aspects of secure messaging,” said Bill Bradford, vice president of Corporate Development of Tumbleweed. “We are excited about this business relationship that we have formed with Entrust through the cross-licensing of intellectual property.” About Tumbleweed Communications Corp.
