Tumbleweed Joins Stay Safe Online Campaign

Encourages Consumers to Take Steps to Protect Home and Business Computers From Cyber Attacks

REDWOOD CITY, CA - February 2, 2002 - Tumbleweed® Communications Corp. (Nasdaq:TMWD), a leading provider of secure content management solutions for enabling the business Internet, today announces participation in the National Cyber Security Alliance's Stay Safe Online campaign. The campaign is designed to educate home and small business computer users on critical elements of cyber security through several venues including: national computer security awareness days coinciding with the days Americans change their clocks, a new Web site - www.staysafeonline.info, a national poster campaign, audio technical discussions with security experts, and public service announcements.

The National Cyber Security Alliance is a new partnership of government and industry members aligned with the common goal of educating Americans on the need for computer security as an aspect of homeland defense. Members of the Alliance are calling on all American citizens to be vigilant in their efforts to protect home and small business systems, and work together to help spread the message on cyber security.

"Tumbleweed is proud to be a member of the National Cyber Security Alliance and we believe in the critical importance of the message of the Stay Safe Online campaign," said Jeffrey C. Smith, Chairman and CEO of Tumbleweed Communications Corp. "All Americans have a duty to ensure that their personal cyber resources are protected and safe from attack, and that individual computers cannot be used to launch attacks against others. One of the first steps in launching this campaign was for the Alliance to create and offer individual security tips on its Web site so consumers can safely communicate over and use the Internet. We're pleased to have joined with other members to help create this educational tool."

In addition to serving as a member of the National Cyber Security Alliance, Tumbleweed participated in an Information Technology Association of American (ITAA) polling late last year on American's concerns about Internet and computer security. The poll, "Keeping the Faith: Government, Information Security and Homeland Cyber Defense," revealed that 74 percent expressed fears that their personal information on the Internet could be stolen or used for malicious purposes. An equal number said they are concerned that cyber-attacks could target critical infrastructure assets like telephone networks and power plants.

"Reinforcing these concerns revealed in the ITAA poll, Tumbleweed fully supports the Alliance and is pleased to collaborate with leading government agencies and partners in the industry to improve America's cyber security," said Smith. "It is imperative to do our part to promote security awareness for our nation's security."
